Solving the Amazon’s Water Crisis: How Permaculture & Food Forests Can End Shortages
Let’s see what’s happening right now in the Amazon rainforest.
For starters, the best way to look at this situation is dire. Immense forest fires have brought down massive amounts of the rainforest, and that is after a great many human made fires have decimated large portions of it already.
What can we do about this? It may seem counter intuitive. However, planting more permaculture foods will actually help hold more water in place wherever you are on the planet. This is because the root system travels through the soil seeking water and they have their own way of pulling it down to where they are deep in the soil. It also creates small spaces under the soil because of the biological movement activity that goes on all around plants’ roots. When the rain falls, it seeks out these spaces under the soil to rest. When there are no roots in place, the air spaces collapse and there’s no room for the water. By keeping roots in the soil, we create those spaces and the pull of roots to bring water down and keep it there for the nourishment of the plant.
With this in mind, what are the favorite kinds of foods that grow permanently nearby in your vicinity? Would you have the ability to get one or more of these plants placed close to where you live? If most people on Earth did this simple solution, imagine how much rain would be captured, held in place and provide food at the same time?
You can do it right now.
