Food Forests – What Are They?

This may surprise you, but most people have no idea what a food forest is. It’s even difficult to find a picture of one on public image sites. Yet the world needs them NOW.

Why?

In half the world there is more desertified land than farmable land. Because current farming techniques call for soil-killing pesticides and artificial fertilizer, the most durable solution is eating clean, perennial foods, those grown in food forests, leaving the soil undisturbed to recover from chemical onslaught. Once chefs pick up on this, the whole world will change for the better.

Current farmers and ranchers can switch rather quickly to meet the demand of foods grown forest-style by converting land one small acre/half-hectare each year. Results in soil health and cooling can be felt in just one season in and just outside the food forest. The earth is continuously covered and cooled, and water needs go down in those areas with deep, undisturbed roots helping water to stay underground and not evaporate quickly. More nutrients can be converted from this undisturbed soil because there are more little critters there able to bring soil nutrients to the roots.

Chefs, are you listening?

We can do this worldwide quickly with trios of cooperatives doing the work shoulder-to-shoulder. Let’s get going! @reapgoodness
